WTN: Fonseca Vintage Port 1985

After trying a new (and quite good) Japanese restaurant near our place with Marly and Jocel, we went back home for some dessert wine in lieu of dessert. I thought a half bottle of port would hit the spot so we settled on this Fonseca.

Still an inky purple core although the edge is browning slightly. Good nose with sweet spices, fruitcake, chocolate and blue and black fruits. This wine really shines on the palate. Full, rich, syrupy texture. Great complexity but still relatively youthful. Bittersweet cocoa powder, Christmas pudding, plums, dates, figs, and candied cherries. The girls said pecans and licorice. Fine, dusty tannins still present. The astringency suggests duhat (Java Plum). The sweetness is just right although it does end with some dryness which I guess comes from the astringency. Good length. A warming drink and dangerously easy to consume. I probably could have finished the entire half bottle by myself. Outstanding wine that still has a lot of life in it, even from a half bottle. This could easily go on for another 15 years or so. Alas, my only bottle.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
