Winery Visits-Conn Creek and Corison

by Brian K Miller » Wed Sep 05, 2012 10:41 am

Took a day off yesterday to take care of some errands...and bicycle.

Anyway...visited Conn Creek Winery in Rutherford and found the cabernet lineup very solid. Their wines seemed kinda old school...in a good way...with little over-extraction. Definitely not fruit and oak bombs! I enjoyed all three of the 2007 single vineyard cabs, one from Truchard vineyard, one from Collins Vineyard in St. Helena, and one from Spring Mountain. The St. Helena wine was, of course, the lushest, with delicious black fruit. The Truchard (Carneros) cab was still plenty ripe and dark but just had more of that "edge" which speaks of cooler climates. The 2007 Spring Mountain was extremely "ferrous" and proably merits cellaring. Very pleasant. The Bordeaux blend (Anthology) was the most "modern" of the four wines and not really to my palate. A little soft and sweet, to be honest. All of their wines are moderately priced by modern high end Napa standards. A nice visit.

Corison is Corison. The 2008 Helios Cab Franc is NOW OUT. It is simply stunning, with delicious tangyness, great crunchy fruit. Wow.

The 2009 Corison Napa Valley, even in its infancy, also showed beautifully. It was actually my favorite wine of the tasting! Tang, beautiful black currant fruit. Approachable now! Fantastic!

Count me as a fan of Corison and the Cabs age beautifully. I drank a 1999 Kronos a few months ago, and I could have kicked myself for not holding onto it longer. I just ordered a couple of 2009s, so it was good to read your positive note on it.
