WTN: Hot to Trotanoy

Salil was over for dinner on Saturday. We started with a little aperitif.

2004 Schäfer-Fröhlich Riesling halbtrocken
This is actually labeled "medium dry", and is in fact a kabinett halbtrocken. With 8 years of bottle age, it is very mineral and nearly dry. This is a lovely Riesling for an aperitif or dinner. There's not much in the way of fruit, but a nice sense of richness on the back end, makes it a complete if not the most interesting wine. Good, uncomplicated drinking.

I made some burgers. Salil provided an understated burger wine...

2002 Château Trotanoy
Well this is lovely. It's surprisingly approachable, and the fruit is nearly sweet. The structure really only comes out on the back end, but it also has an underpinning minerality that keeps things very focused. Quite delicious now, with the balance to hold and improve for a long time to come. Not so bad with the burgers.
