2011 Olaf Schneider Riesling Auslese semi-dry, Mosel/Germany
Never heard of "Weingut O." from Traben-Trarbach, Mosel/Germany? However, if you like Riesling wich character you might like this wine:
Recently bottled, not yet commercially launched. Naturally fermented ("Spontangärung" in German). 18 grams of residual sugar (if I rember correctly).
Made from ungrafted 100 year old vines. A selection of grapes free from botrytis, harvested in November only.
Complex aromatics of yeast, minerality, black currant, wisteria and white blossoms on the nose.
On the palate it is showing its impressive backbone of salty minerality, sappy tannins and vibrant acidity reminiscent of tropical fruits.
"Riesling with structure", as Philipp B. probably would say. Athletic structure, great depth and luscious harmony make this rich beauty difficult to resist, indeed. And it appears to be light on its feet although there is massive power and concentration. My heartfelt congratulations to Nick, Olaf & team for this achievement!
Cheers, Rainer
