What I did on my summer vacation . . .

by Florida Jim » Sat Sep 01, 2012 1:25 am

During the past summer (and several years previous) I have been trying to get fruit from a very special vineyard in the Russian River. This year, we got lucky.

Very nice, Jim. A new grape to try.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

A fruit I would like to get from the Russian Rivers is Pinot Noir from either Rocioli or Wilyem Salem .

Not at the price they want.
It would require you to sell the wine over $75/bottle, if they would sell it to you.

This is really weird to me: Three times in the past 24 hours I have heard the term "orange wine"' all from separate sources. I'd never heard this term before in my life, to my recollection. I was about to post a question here about it's meaning, Jim, but your video negated the need for me to do that. Thank you.
Good luck with the new grape!

I stopped buying wine a few years ago and find the expensive prices of then are modest today. Some on this forum and at MoCool have treated me to those wines, on the websites look like under 50.00. I recently paid $45 $39 for Siduri bottlings. That is similiar to many years ago.

Pinot prices as of this year are out of control. Gap's Crown at $7,500 a ton and many of the more desirable vineyards in that range. If you have wines you love that we're under $50, enjoy them. They won't be that price in the future.

We came across lots of Ribola Gialla in Friuli and Slovenia but didn't care for it much. As Jim says, It's very different from more familiar whites.

Particularly, the skin contact or 'orange' versions can be polarizing.
Not for everybody but I love them.

RG is the one grape where I find that I prefer the orange version. I have found the few "normal" RGs I have tried to be rather balnd.

So is your RG going to be orange? For the most part I like orange wines (with food), but of course it varies by how good producer is.
Of course there are degrees, I like your Isa SB, which I assume is "orange light" :)

Dale,
'Orange' is one of those terms like natural and reserve; no one has any idea what it really means.
But our RG will be fermented to dry on the skins, pressed to barrel and allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation. That's about as orange as I get 'cause I can't stand any oxidation in the wine.
So, you tell me; orange, orange lite or some species I never heard of?
