WTN: 2001 Chave 'Offerus' & 2004 Sauzet P-M

by Jenise » Fri Aug 24, 2012 7:31 pm

2001 J. L. Chave "Offerus", St. Joseph
Last of two bottles purchased in 2004. Fantastic Chave-y nose of bandaid, charcoal and roast beef with soft dark fruit on the palate. Support system more acid than tannins now, and the fruit has trouble keeping up in the second glass but oh wow, it was a noble effort.
Excellent paired with brown butter grilled fresh halibut on lentils cooked with tomato, onion and herbs.

2004 Etienne Sauzet 'Les Garennes', Puligny-Montrachet, 1er Cru
Oxidated. :x

The dreaded pre mox. Too many bottles of white burgs have suffered the same fate. :( Hopefully it's a thing of the past.

We're getting quite tired of these preemies.

There is zero evidence to suggest that premox is a thing of the past.

Our store seems to be getting less in the way of returns and complaints due to pre mox but then on the other hand our sales of white burgs have been somewhat diminished. Ok, no evidence that pre mox has gone down, but hell nobody in Burgundy of any consequence ever admitted that it existed. Not a clue to the true state of today's white Burgs. I've argued with myself and lost. Jeez!!!!!

You know what's even sadder than one bad bottle of Etienne Sauzet? Two. Just discovered I have another in the cellar. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

And you don't know if it's actually bad. A couple of months ago, we opened two bottles of Sauzet 2005's and both were in great condition. Champ-Canet and Perrieres.

Right, but the Sauzet I reported on here was our second bad bottle--another, about two years ago, was also premoxed though of course less severely. Chances are poor for bottle #3.
