1993 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett

Bought directly from the winery in 2006. (well done 8) ) The cork was not in good condition any more, however the wine obviously didn't suffer from it. On the contrary: it improved with continued airing.
Scent of wet rock (slate), white peaches, currant, withered elder blossom, gooseberries and some freshly cut grass. All this is being confirmed on the palate with distinctive steelyness, freshness and precision. The acidity is slightly reminiscent of green apples (remember: it's 1993 and just a Kabinett). Amazing stature and complexity for what it is. :D I think this won't get any better, however there's no need to hurry with drinking it up. - My personal rating: 85/100.

Cheers, Rainer

Hi Rainer -

Thank you for the interesting note again. It's been a while since I had anything from Grünhäus.

Anyway, I have not had the 1993 Abstberg Kabinett, but did enjoy a 93 Herrenberg Kabinett a few years ago. Glad to hear that this one is still showing nicely.

Indeed. I remember buying several bottles of this from the winery in 2007, although I drank them all shortly thereafter. Delicious memories, and nice to see that you're extending the fun.

Rainer, your words seem much more enthusiastic than your score but perhaps I should congratulate you for resisting score inflation. On the 100 point scale I have got used to assuming that the reviewer thinks that a wine scoring less than 90 points is hardly worth recommending. Not that I have much palate agreement with many of the famous professional reviewers using that scale and I often find myself preferring their 85 scorers to the 95 scorers.

BTW a few months ago I found the Herrenberg Kabinett 93, also bought at the estate, delicious with a small proviso about sulphur traces.

Tim - there's also that other trap for scoring - kabinett ends up with a ceiling at 90 or so, spatlese at 95, and so on.
