2001 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese **

Tasted from a well stored half-bottle.
Showing some sulphur :? and subtle minerality on the nose. There's also delicate aroma of yellow fruit reminiscent of peach, mango and caramelized banana. Rather light on the palate, showing medium concentration, low acidity and some rather simple fruit reminiscent of candy stuff made for children. Rather confusing and disappointing in its current phase. Maybe it will find its way after another 5-10 years of bottle maturity? Actually I've used to be a fan of this vintage, this producer and this vineyard. - My personal rating: 80+/100.

Cheers, Rainer

Hi Rainer -

Thank you for the note. I don't have a vast amount of experience with Markus Molitor's wines (it's rare for me to run into anything besides the non-vineyard-designated Spatlese and the Haus Klosterberg QbA). That being said, a 2001 two-star Auslese could probably benefit from a few more years to fully come around. If you have any left, I'd recommend holding them for a few more years, which is what I'm doing with my sweeter 2001s.

I have found Molitor inconsistent and rather overrated. But that's me.
