Last night's dinner and board meeting of the International Wine and Food Society was at Impressions with a special menu created by Chef Cyrille Soenen, and which would also be used for our September event in the same restaurant. Food was excellent except for the soup which was rather salty so this is going to be changed to a lobster ravioli dish, I believe. Anyway, I arrived late due to some miscommunication about whether or not the meeting would push through. Fortunately, the traffic wasn't bad and I was nearby so I caught most of the meeting. Lots of Burgundy was on hand to pair with the food. Most of it good but not too interesting. There was a white Grand Cru which was gone when I got there so I suppose it must have been very good.
My wine of the night, though, was the Domaine Laroche Les Blanchots Chablis Grand Cru 2004 - I was informed that this was Domaine Laroche's top wine. Most Chablis isn't really to my taste but I must say this was pretty awesome stuff. Orange rind, white chocolate, nougat, butter and oyster shells. It's a pretty fleshy wine but there is an underlying stony/mineral element underlying it all. A great deal of complexity and likely at peak now. I would guess this has seen a bit of oak but it works very well here and is seamlessly integrated. Outstanding.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
