Winery Visit-Thomas Fogarty (Santa Cruz AVA)

by Brian K Miller » Mon Aug 20, 2012 1:08 pm

The Thomas Fogarty winery is located on the ridgeline well above Palo Alto on Skyline Drive in San Mateo County. An absolutely stunning location amongst oaks and redwoods.

I inflicted my spandex clad self on the tasting room friday  The climb from Woodside up Old La Honda Road is an absolutely stunning bicycle road, with great views, redwoods, oak trees, country mega-estates. A road like Old La Honda reminds me again why I love cycling! Not TOO much traffic, either, as the road is a tiny one-to-two lane route that doesn't really go anywhere.

There was a couple of older gentlemen in the room who were original investors/employees of Atari video games! Silicon Valley!

Anyway, I quite enjoyed the wines. A little pricey, but Fogarty seems to hold their wines for release, as they were pouring 2005! and 2006 vintages.

I loved the Estate Chardnnay. Extremely tangy and leesy...almost had a Jura character in its minerality and savoriness. I don't even "like Chardonnay" and this was my favorite wine of the day.

Thre Estate Pinot Noir was decent but didn't wow me.

The 2005 Cabernet Franc was showing nice age and good Cab Franc typicite, with lovely fruit and savory notes and only a hint of bell pepper. Delicious.

The meritage was nice, but I preferred the 2006 "Cabernet" bottling, which had a wonderful freshness to the nose and palate and a very Old World sensitbility. I seem to be finding the California Cabernets which exhibit this freshness and balance...Dashe and Loxton (Sonoma) and Corison!

The tasting room manager bemoaned the fact that he had gained weight after his marriage, so we chatted about cycling a bit as well!

A nice visit...will definitely try them again!

How was the ride back down, Brian??? A bit easier???
I generally like the Fogarty wines. Not killer stuff, but decent.

Thanks for the note Brian. I seem to remember that Fogarty made a nice Gewurztraminer that showed up in Ohio but I guess they were not pouring that one.

The other folks had tried it and liked it.

I pick and choose what I drink while cycling, so...

I adctually liked them a little more than "decent". I remember not being all that impressed five years ago, but...these were nice.
