I've never been to Sicily, but based on the wines I've had from the past and this most recent trio, I am sure I would love it.
Occhipinti, Sicilia IGT, Il Frappato, 2008
My first time with this was a corked bottle of the 2006, but based on other users notes, I was not long dissuaded from trying a non-defective bottle. Slightly reductive upon opening, it soon reveals very floral aromatics of osmanthus and honeysuckle. The palate displays aromatic sweet-sour fruits, guanabana, Middle Eastern rosewater flavored Turkish delight, some confectionery sugar with a sour-edged finish. Tannins have melted away. This wien feels like macerated grapeskins. Very interesting and appealing. A- Definate repurchase.
Biondi, Etna (bianco), 'Outis', 2008
Initially a dull nose, which opens to an oxidative, saline nose. Green herbs swirling in a saline sea, a little reminiscent of a white Southern Rhone, but one that doesn't pack as much alcoholic punch. Mineral laden finish. With air, there's a slight paper mill smell that comes out. The most interesting thing here is the texture: it comes across as weighty, and yet, is fairly light. It maintains a certain gravitas, almost like an ancient greek or Roman marble column. 12.5% B+ Definately be buying again, if I can find it. [60% Carricante, 40% field blend of Minnella, Malvasia, Catarrati, Moscatello]
I Vigneri di Salvo Foti, Etna Rosso, 'Vinupetra', 2005
From Sicily's own 'driving' (because Sicily is a small island, I doubt he flies very much) winemaker's own winery. At $50+USD, this is not cheap, but is Salvo Foti's best wine he makes. Ruby red colored, a nose of leather-encased cherries with a sweet perfume. Very beautiful and balanced, I am glad I aged this before opening. Very structural still, exhibiting a tannic spine running through it. Cherry, sweet spices, strong earth component, good mouthfeel, orange rind, quartz and feldspar minerals. Not quite sure what the blend is here, but probably at least the two nerello's make their presence. 14% A-
