Dinner with David and Laura at Mei Tzu on Friday evening - good to catch up after a few weeks of vacation and travelling, and some nice wines at the table.
2010 Immich-Batterieberg Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling
Great stuff. Fresh floral and herbal scents leading into a palate full of lean, precise pear and citrus fruits and a vivid stony mineral base beneath. There's tremendous acidity here that keeps it very focused and vibrant, but there's also just enough sweetness to keep it from feeling too austere or severe. Really enjoyed this one with some air as it kept developing more aromatic nuance and depth with time.
2004 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese
Under screwcap. There's a lot of reduction and an metallic note here that's very prominent at first; it calms down with a little air as the fruit emerges but never entirely blows off. Pleasantly sweet, working nicely at the table with the spicier dishes though the reductive quality remains rather distracting.
2001 Domaine de la Chevalerie Bourgueil
A lovely food wine; harmonious and mature with dark fruits, tobacco, herbal elements and leathery elements combining together seamlessly. It's very light on its feet with bright acids, more enjoyable with food than on its own and drinking wonderfully right now though I don't imagine it getting any better.
