Last Friday, one week after moving in to our new home, my wife and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. Amazing to be married to a woman who still makes you feel, after 10 years, that we are still just a young married couple with so much to look forward to. Anyway, since we don't know any babysitters yet, we took a rain check on going out and spent the evening in, which was just perfect for enjoying the wine I laid down for the occasion. While my wife has a sophisticated palate and can recognize the quality of most wines, she does still prefer them on the white and sweet side, so I wanted to make sure it was something she would enjoy and drink. She loved it! And it was an exceptionally good match to the seared scallops, couscous, and sauteed zucchini.
Joh. Jos. Prum, Riesling Spatlese, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Mosel 2002
Still only the lightest golden yellow in color. Exceptional, rich, heady, deep nose, with nice petrol notes. On the nose and palate, a core of ripe, pure apricot, with d'Anjou pear, tropical fruits, oranges, flowers, a very nice sweetgrass note, and mineral/slate. Full bodied but light on its feet, moderately sweet but so well balanced by slightly steely acidity that it behaves almost like a dry wine at times, and is exceptionally food friendly. Only hinting at what may come with maturity, its balance is such that I believe it can last another 15 - 20 years. A truly outstanding Riesling, in fact, probably the best Riesling I've had. * * * * 1/2. (8/10/12)
