Wine maker in Houston

by Les Mc » Fri Aug 17, 2012 3:43 pm

Hi. I'm new to the forum and am looking for people that are into home winemaking. I also struggle with some of the tasting notes I've read. So far I've never tasted any wine, commercial or private, that had a leather taste/feel/texture. Most I have ever been able to discern is the taste of plum in Amarone. Not raisin, plum. Maybe my buds are burnt out from years of single malt scotch!
Anyway, happy to be here and anxious to meet others that make and enjoy wine. I'm a red person BTW. :D

Hi Les Mc and welcome to WLDG! Even though this site is not targeted to winemaking itself, there are very knowledgeable people here! Like you I’m an amateur home winemaker, over the years I learned a lot from those who post here! I raise my glass to them!

Salute

Hi Les and welcome to a great place to learn about wines, but not wine making. The best site for home wine makers is http://www.winepress.us. There are lots of knowledgeable wine makers more than willing to share there knowledge, including kit makers, fruit wine makers, amateurs, and owners of small wineries. There is even a forum for grape growing.

Welcome Les!

Howie is being a bit modest.... he's a great home winemaker!

But, this is a great place to learn about wines in general.... get to reading the wine notes (threads that begin with WTN) which may help you find wines you can try that are available to you.

As for leather taste/smell in wines, had a few over the MoCool weekend just completed... I tend to find it in some aged Bordeaux. Rarely if ever in young wines.

Hope you stick around, and don't be shy posting questions or better yet, your own tasting notes!

In search of the perfect QPR wine.... does it exist?
