2002 Echezeaux Grand Cru, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Enjoyed with Nick in a restaurant. Sadly the other guys couldn't join, they've actually missed something ..
Subtle scent of wild raspberries, griottes, elderberries, beet root, decent oak, herbs, smoky wood of vines and pheasant meat. The complexity of its highly aromatic and vibrant acidity is literally indescribable. Focused, precise, perfectly balanced, completely natural in taste - in short: a dangerous drug.
If I would own some of this I would start drinking it up after another 5 years of bottle maturity.
Is it worth its price? Here comes the bad news: I'm afraid it is. - My personal rating: 93+/100.

There's the issue with DRC. It's worth the money.

Here's the thing with scores. You can't score a DRC and say it's worth its price, because I'm pretty sure you can find less expensive wines that scored the same that you might feel are not worth their price?

Ah yes - taking the score out of context from the note again. How I have missed that.

It's not a question of context. I think the note itself and the comment regarding the price renders the score irrelevant.

Well since he says it's his personal rating, I don't think it's supposed to be particularly relevant to you.

First I must say that I am not a professional scorer. Secondly, I should have mentioned that I have rated this wine in the paradigm of Burgundy Grand Cru. Given the fact that there are Burgundy Grand Crus (on the same price level) which are substantially better than this wine (e.g. 2002 Joseph Roty Charmes Chambertin TVV, 2002 Armand Rousseau Chambertin, etc.) I think my personal (subjective) rating is appropriate.

But they're probably cheaper, that's all I'm saying, and I was wondering whether you'd consider them worth the price, too. But anyway, like you and David said, it's all subjective anyway.

The Roty is less, but the Rousseau is about the same price, in the US secondary market, and likely a bit more.
