WTN: 1990 Salon & 1995 Bollinger

by David M. Bueker » Mon Aug 13, 2012 6:16 pm

Anniversary over the weekend. Saturday it was steamed lobsters and Champagne, the annual anniversary meal.

1990 Salon
Much bigger and blockier than expected. Lots of toast and even some youthful yeastiness over a big citrus core. Seems like it still needs time, as it's too chunky. Still it was very tasty, but I expect more from Salon. Just too impatient I guess.

Sunday Thor & Theresea stopped through on their way to Vermont. Lots of food and lots of wine (shocking!). To accompany a frittata with caramelized onions and sage and a side of butter sauteed lobster tails we drank:

1995 Bollinger Grand Annee
Oh my gosh, this is great wine. It still has a core of red fruit, along with just finished wheat toast and a long, long, lingering finish that dominates the palate for what seems like foreever. Why oh why did I never buy this wine in magnum??? Sure you could age this gem for a while longer, but why - it's stunning now.

Champagne and lobster, how lovely. Happy Anniversary to you and Laura. And what a surprise about the Salon, that at 22 years old it might need more time. We tend to presume that certain wines require a good long nap but we don't consider that some might go in and out throughout their lives. I've seen other evidence of it in some very old wines.

I thought that was one of the basic non-rule rules of tracking red Burgundy!
