Victoria Restaurant Suggestions Needed

by Clint Hall » Sun Aug 12, 2012 7:21 pm

I'll be in Victoria B.C. late this coming week with my wife and granddaughter, who just graduated from college, and need some ideas about where to eat. I haven't been there in three or four years but used to enjoy Cafe Brio, which is about the sort of place we are looking for although, as I seem to recall, the wine list wasn't great. Also the kid loves ethnic restaurants, especially Indian, so we'll need a couple of those. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can't help much here, Clint. We have friends who rave about Sooke Harbor House, but I understand it's tough to get a res there. Supposed to be great however. Foodies talk about ferrying up for a couple of days from Seattle just so they can stay at and dine at Sooke. Pricy.

My own experience in Victoria is very limited and Cafe Brio would have been my suggestion (I enjoyed a meal there last summer), so I'm not much help either. If you're in a pizza mood, it's very good at either location of Pizzeria Prima Strada, featuring local ingredients including even Mozzerella di Bufala made on Vancouver Island!

Can't help you on Victoria, but I just returned from Vancouver and had two phenomenal meals. The first was at a new place called Fable, http://www.fablekitchen.ca. Wonderfully inventive food prepared conscientiously and with respect at relatively great prices. Great people too. Second meal was at Vij's, http://www.vijs.ca. Go early and sign up (5:30-6:00). We had about a 1-1.5 hr wait, so we walked up to http://westrestaurant.com, sat at the bar and some truly fantastic cocktails.
Regards,
Gregg

Good choices, Gregg. I've not eaten at Fable but know it moved into the space formerly occupied by Fuel. You wouldn't have been disappointed if you'd had to eat while you were at West, either.

Btw, Clint may not know that BYO is now legal in BC. The restaurant, of course, has to allow it, and Clint might (or not) want to check into that for his Victoria trip.

Thanks, all, for the advice. Cafe Brio was as excellent as it was the last time we were there a few years ago, although the wine list wouldn't win any prizes south of the border. (A BYOB would have been a good idea.) And Victoria abounds with serviceable little East Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants, so we dined pleasantly.

Hi Clint,

I know this is too late for this trip, but next time consider going to IL Terrazzo in downtown Victoria. It is a bit hard to find as it down an alley, but it is well worth looking for. I had an excellent meal there of tuna and mushroom risotto. I had a glass of premium pinot from Chile that was an excellent match with the risotto and very good with the tuna. I thought the wine list was good and it did have Wine Spectator recognition. A bit expensive but the quality warranted the price.
