WTN: Steininger Gruner Veltliner Trocken 2010

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Aug 04, 2012 10:21 am

Kamptal
Weingut Steininger

Light, bright yellow in the glass.

Medium weight, some very light spritz in the glass, lemon, lime, grapefruit, very peppery, tangy acidity, drying, clean, refreshing, quite bitter citrus rind bite, with (strangely enough) a faint hint of honey.

Bitter grapefruit rind on the mouthwatering finish.

While I do enjoy GV and I did, for the most part, enjoy this wine, I did find the bitter citrus rind intensity a bit wearing after a short time. Interestingly enough, the front label didn't feature the word Trocken. I only found it on the back label, in a smaller font.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $14.95 (Canadian).

Bruce,

Thanks for the note. Steininger is IMO one of the great QPR producers in the Kamptal (and one of the greatest Sekt producers in Austria.) As seems to be the case with many Austrian wine families, the Steiningers are incredibly generous and friendly. Their maze of cellars under Langenlois are some of the most impressive that I've ever encountered -you could film a murder mystery movie down there. The basic GV trocken is always among the best values in Austria, though unfortunately the distribution is limited (and 2010 in Austria somewhat mirrored the extremes of Germany in that vintage). Try if you can, the sparkling wines.

Cheers,
Bill

Thanks for the input, Bill. For all its faults, the LCBO (government run booze monopoly) does bring in a good and varied (and inexpensive) selection of GV, which I am more than happy to take off their hands. :D
