TN: Ravenswood SonomaCnty Cab '82..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Jul 27, 2012 1:19 pm

We tried last Sun:
1. Ravenswood CabSauv SonomaCnty (13.3%) 1982: Med.color w/ slight bricking; bit tired cedary/old Cab slight smokey/mousey little fruit nose; soft bit tired/dried out cedary/tobaccoy/old Cab light toasty/oak slight herbal/smokey flavor; med.long some dried out/tannic rather cedary/pencilly/old Cab light smokey/herbal finish; still some interesting old Cab character but clinging to life and seen much better days.

1. I have, of course, followed Ravenswood from the very start. Actually...before the very start. First met JoelPeterson when he was a cellar rat working for JoeSwan. About '74 I recall. He had more hair then...as did I.
He partnered w/ W.ReedFoster (founder of the Vintner'sClub, along w/ JerryDraper, in SanFrancisco) to produce two Zinfandels in '76, the Vogelson and the ?? vnyd. They were not "whimpy" wines.
I had not seen Reed in probably 25 yrs, so I tracked him down and made arrangements to vist him & Lois at their home on the eastern outskirts of the town of Sonoma. The spend their (long) weekends in Sonoma and the middle of the week in Berkeley.
This is the wine I took along to share w/ Reed & Lois over some cheese & crackers and much good conversation, catching up on each other's lives.
