Winery Visit: Urban Cycling Leads to Urban Winery Visit!

by Brian K Miller » Mon Jul 23, 2012 8:53 pm

As it was over 100 degrees inland on Sunday, I decided to do some "urban" cycling...basically along the East Bay Shoreline from Richmond to Oakland. (Unlike inland...I actually needed a LONG SLEEEVE jersey as it was only 65 and windy!)

So...I discovered Urban Legend Cellars on Fourth Street. Very impressed, actually. They make a nice Tocai Friulani/Sauvignon Vert from Nichellini fruit that was tangy and delicious and very pleasant. I also enjoyed the Tempranillo quite a bit. Plenty of tangyness seems to be a characteristic of their wines. I ended up with a bottle of Petit Verdot, which I often find intriguing. Nice place and fine wines!

Following her advice, I continued along Fourth Street and discovered DASHE CELLARS, which I liked even more! The Grenache was remarkably peppery and delicious, the Zins were pleasant, and the Cabernet was very balanced and elegant, with a touch of enjoyable green and a great mouthfeel. Very neat discovery...it's on a block of Fourth Street at the lower end of Fourth Street which is kind of hidden, so I never even knew they were there!

JC Cellars shared the tasting room. Bigger, richer wines, but they poured a smokey Syrah heavy blend that was interesting as well.

Dashe has been making good Zin for quite awhile. Usually made with restraint and well balanced. :D

I've been aware of their reputation so it was nice to actually try them out!
