Cellar inventory completed!

by Jon Peterson » Wed Jul 18, 2012 12:00 pm

As forum members will appreciate this more than anyone, I wanted to post the fact that, after the better part of three days, I have completed a complete inventory of my modest cellar and inputted all the wines into CellarTracker.com. I've been buying a lot of wine recently and things were getting out of hand. I feel so much better knowing what I have and what needs to be opened and the approximate values of everything. I did find a first growth Bordeaux that I had forgotten about but there were no other surprises. Now I must keep the inventory up to date and hopefully my contribution to CellarTracker will make that happen since I believe people take things more seriously if they pay for them.
Thanks for your time - JP

Somehow I think that one surprise is enough!

Keeping up with CellarTracker is a slippery slope. I do a pretty good job, but sometimes I forget to deduct a few things. That typically happens when I go away for a few days & take a case of wine with me for various dinners. When I get back I forget to take out the wines we consumed.

I have used a MS Access template for years but began transitioning to Cellar Tracker last fall. While purchases have been loaded, I have not been inputting location....and I need to do that as well.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to use the Location and Bin fields effectively to track the whereabouts of bottles?
Cheers!

If storing in racking, then A1 (for bin) at bottom left, with B1 to its right and A2 above it. Seems to work well for me. Location used for different storage e.g. wine fridge, racking etc.

David
Something I've found helpful is when I decide what wine I want to take on a trip, or take to an event, I tag the bottles as a created "wishlist" which helps me when I pull the wine from the cellar and also let's me catch up on cellear tracker after the trip/event. Also can print the list, which is sometimes cool.

I have not, Ian. Do you have a link to it?

I need to do the same, Jon. I still keep mine on an Excel sheet. Every time we drink a singleton, I kind of inwardly celebrate that another line item is gone, meaning it will be easier to input it all to Cellar Tracker. Some day. :)

Jenise, I believe you can upload an Excel spreadsheet to Cellar Tracker and avoid all the manual input.
Cheers!
