WTN: Picnic

by David M. Bueker » Mon Jul 16, 2012 7:48 am

Afternoon event with some local friends. As per usual I was asked to bring along the wines. At least I don't have to cook in this nasty heat and humidity!

Fare was the typical summer pot luck, so I did not try to do any matching.

2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Rosé
Crisp red fruits. Strangely there was some back end heat. Odd that the rosé would be the only wine of the day to show alcohol. Is this fading?

2008 Josef Leitz Rudesheimer Klosterlay Riesling Kabinett
Slight reduciton, but it blew off in 15 minutes or so. Underripe peach and plenty of citrus fruit dominate the nose and palate. Bright and not showing particularly sweet at all, even as it warmed up. If Dale Williams had been there I bet he would have given it a B or maybe a B+ once the reduction blew off.

2009 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
Dramatically sweeter than the Leitz. Drippingly ripe peach with enough back end acidity to keep it interesting.

2001 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin
This was in the wine bag from another event & so got dragged along and opened. It was actually quite nice. I kept the open bottle in the bag to maintain a reasonable temperature, and it showed lovely herbs and deep red fruit. Coming into its own as a very drinkable CNdP. Of course it's my last bottle.

2009 Anthill Farms Syrah Campbell Ranch Vineyard
One of our friends says that Syrah is her favorite wine. Well she really liked this. I did too. Very meaty with plenty of dark fruit. Not hot or overblown, just a youthful essence of Syrah.

Fun afternoon that put a tiny dent in the inventory.

A couple of people I respect have opined the Baudry roses could age, but mine have never really lasted much past one vintage. Not sure what aging would accomplish. Outside of LdH and maybe the biggest Sancerres or Bandols, I'm usually looking for freshness in rose.
I probably would have given the Leitz a B+= I'm an easy grader!

Stocking up here on the `10 Leitz Rudesheimer Klosterlay Riesling Kabinett. Have another Leitz TN coming up shortly!

I own one bottle of that Janasse, nice to read a note on it. Will wait a bit to open mine based on your findings, so thanks.

Chiming in here, I opened my last '10 Baudry rosé after returning from NZ and I did notice less vibrant fruit at that time (April or May).
