Rosé was the monthly theme for June, but with July being hotter, I am even more inclined to seek out a good pink wine now. Although I've had quite a few wines from both of these producers, their rosés were both new to me. While I enjoyed both of them, I would probably go with the Prieler if forced to pick between the two. Nonetheless, both are quite nice for under $20.
2010 Familie Prieler Rosé “vom Stein” Neusiedlersee-Hügelland
A blend of Blaufränkisch and Merlot. Raspberry/floral nose. Full-bodied, bone dry, fresh, riper and denser than many rosés, though well balanced, with moderate acidity. Lightly mineral; tastes of red berries, red plums, cantaloupe, and apricots. Very good; I would think that this has enough stuffing to age for a couple of years or so.
2011 Domaine Mas Amiel Côtes de Roussillon Rosé “Le Plaisir”
70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Carignan. Watermelon/lightly mineral nose. Fuller bodied, round, moderately structured for rosé; fresh, well balanced, with moderate acidity. Rather floral; tastes of red fruits, especially strawberries and watermelon; lightly spicy/mineral. Very good.
