WTN: Painful leason learned yet again!

by Richard Fadeley OLD » Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:05 pm

In spite of disparaging tasting notes on Cellar Tracker, I decided to open Frederic Magnien '06 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Charmes". It was massively disappointing, in spite of a 2 hour decant, then back into the bottle. I mean completely dead! I tried again on day 2, but no improvement. I remember Bill Nanson (Burgundy Report) saying that you need to drink your '06's soon before they shut down. Boy, was he right about that. So it lays around the kitchen for a few days, open, then I put the Vaccuvin on it (only a half glass was left at this time. After a week or so I put it into the fridge on the outside chance that it was still alive. Took it out of the fridge this AM to make room for something else and put on the table (opened). I just poured the remains of the bottle (about 1/2 glass) and once again, to my amazement, it was all it was ever supposed to be. A solid 1st Cru, Deep, dark and delicious, no signs of oxidation. This was 11 days after opening the bottle and double decanting. Live and learn.

I love Burgundy, but it can be maddening.

I probably would stay away from drinking 06 Burgundy right now, for fear of what you experienced. Besides corked-reduced-heat damaged-oxidised bottles, there is nothing worse than opening a wine during a closed period. At least due to your patience, you got to catch a glimmer of it's potential!
