Trappiste/ViTorchiano 2010: Med.yellow color; quite fragrant very ripe apple/apple pie/grapey light Malavasia/floral bit earthy/apple cider/perfumed talc interesting/pleasant nose; soft ripe apple/apple cider/apple pie light Malvasia/perfumed bit perfumed talc/earthy/chalky/mineral slightly bitter flavor; med.long soft slight tangy/grapefruity rather apple cider/ripe/appley light earthy/Malvasia slightly bitter finish; a rather pretty/interesting white, but just that. $25.00 (CB)

1. This is a wine made by Trappist nuns. Probably its only really claim to fame, I guess. Pleasant enough wine and a nice change of pace. But not much more than that.
I liked one review of this wine I saw on the Net. The reviewer liked the wine...but complained about the difficulty in pronouncing the name. Another reader responded that "the pronunciation is not difficult once you get into the habit"!!

2. Over the last few months, I've been trying a number of Italian whites from middle & southern Italy. This Coenobium was typical of many of them. Though each one seems distinctively different, they have a certain sameness to them, not a lot of fragrant fruit, a certain earthy/stony/mineral character. Perfectly good drinking. But I've found very few that knock my sox off and make me want to revisit the. They just don't sing to me like those from Friuli/AltoAdige/Val d'Aosta...from the Northern climes of Italy. Oh, well...I'll probably keep trying them.

I think another big claim to fame has been that Giampiero Bea, son of Paolo Bea, is a consultant for the wine.

Yup...forgot to mention that. Thanks for jogging my memory, Rahsaan.

Hi Tom -

Thank you for the note. I've never had the "regular" version of this wine, but have had the Coenobium Rusticum (the orange version) a couple of times, and had really liked it.

Aside from the Abtei St. Hildegard wines from Rudesheim in the Rheingau (no, not Bingen), these are the only "nun wines" that I can think of.

Along these lines, have you had the Coenobium Rusticum? It's certainly got plenty of fragrant fruit and for my tastes it is much more 'interesting' than this bottling.
