WTN: 3 Burgs and an Alsatian

by Andrew Bair » Sun Jul 01, 2012 7:01 pm

2009 Maison Louis Jadot – Domaine Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux
Rather understated, floral/pencil/lightly earthy/lightly spicy nose. Medium-bodied, nicely balanced and structured, with fine, elegant tannins. Nicely mineral, tastes of herb-tinged red fruits, with some darker berry and baking spice notes. Fills out more on day 2, with prominent meaty and spearmint notes. Very good/excellent.

2007 Domaine Henri Prudhon et Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sur le Sentier du Clou Vieilles Vignes
Nose of raspberries and earth. Light-bodied, delicate, nicely balanced, with moderate acidity and light tannins. Somewhat gamy, with cranberry, raspberry, mineral, and lightly herbal notes. Needs a little more time to fill out. Very good+.

2005 Domaine Jean-Philippe Fichet Auxey-Duresses
Mineral/caramel/light coconut nose. Medium-bodied, broad, not really fat at all; nicely balanced, with better than average acidity for 2005. Quite mineral, with some earth, cinnamon, apple, and hazelnut notes. Rightly or wrongly, I tend to think of Auxey-Duresses as a baby Meursault; but this is quite different in terms of style from most Meursaults that I have had; less rich and not buttery, and a lot more mineral. Very good; hits above its weight for a village white Burgundy, and an especially good choice for us mineral lovers.

1991 Domaines Schlumberger Gewürztraminer Vendages Tardives Cuvée Christine
From 375 ml bottle, with the grapes coming from the Grand Cru Kesseler. Unfortunately, this is rather tired now, without much acidity remaining at this point. Dry, with honeyed notes; a bit of lychee remaining. Too bad.

Thanks Andrew.

The Jadot sounds like my kind of wine.

I'm not terribly shocked by the Schlumberger. Even for VT, 21 years is a bit of a stretch for Gewurz, especially in 375.
