WTN: 2011 Folonari Soave (DOC)

by Paul B. » Thu Jun 28, 2012 4:42 pm

I had not tried a Soave since 1998, based on my notes... yikes!

Picked this up on the spur of the moment today to have with breaded chicken breast cutlets, lentils, and steamed baby carrots.

$9.95 on general list at the LCBO. 12% alc./vol. Mercifully - closed with a screw cap.

Bright, pale straw colour with a slight greenish tinge. Whoa... huge nose of canteloupe when first opened - quite unexpected, yet pleasant. Later, pineapple and green apples came to the fore as well (could this be Trebbiano? I get the same aromas in many a Vidal, which is part-Trebbiano). Secondary aromas of hay.

Crisp, bold, dry, laser-beam intensity / focus; acidity right on track; beautifully intense in its acidic focus. Warm on the mid-palate, with all manner of yellow fruit and melony goodness coming through. Warm, expansive crispness all across the mid- and aft-palate. Clean, cleansing and dry finish.

This is dangerously gulpable... yet pleasant, and a wonderful addition to the dinner table.

Paul - I had to look it up, but there is no relation to Vidal here. I remember researching this several years ago. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soave_(wine)
Only white wine is produced in the Soave region with a minimum of 70% of the wine coming from the Garganega grape. For Soave DOC wine, up to 30% of the blend can come from Trebbiano di Soave which is also known as Verdicchio and Nestrano. This grape is different from the Trebbiano Toscano variety that is grown in the Tuscany region of Italy and is also known as the Ugni blanc grape used in Cognac production. Trebbiano Toscano is permitted in Soave but can comprise no more than 15% of the blend. All the grapes used for the DOC wine must be harvested to a yield no greater than 14 tonnes/hectare with the finished wine fermented to a minimum alcohol level of at least 10.5%.

The Trebbiano Toscano (Ugni Blanc) is the parent of Vidal.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
