WTN: Bruno Giacosa Spumante Rose Extra Brut 2007

by Jay Labrador » Wed Jun 27, 2012 12:52 am

Traditional Method and 100% Pinot Noir. Very pale salmon pink. Lots of ripe red berries on the nose. Just shy of medium-bodied. On the palate, sour cherry and strawberry and just a touch of smoke. Very dry and savory. Lemon rind on the finish. Medium+ length. Leaves the mouth very clean and might come across to some as rather austere. Not bad with Japanese food.

I have never seen this wine available in the store I frequent even though my main store carries what I thought was a good selection of Giacosa. I will have to inquire next time as to if they can even get it.

If I remember right this became available in Manila around mid 2010 and I read somewhere the 2007 was the first release of this wine. A check with the Giacosa website doesn't have this wine listed. Hope you are able to source it.

I just visited the winery in May. We tasted the Sepumante extra brut 06 (also 100% pinot, single vineyard, 24K btl/yr), and I was frankly amazed how a wine with so much investment of resources and attention (the traditional method all the way) can be retailed for 19EU. Anyway, my notes:

Bruno Giacosa Sepumante extra brut 2006 - complex on the nose combining citrus-y and yeasty aromas, sweetish fruit on the palate, great acidity, smooth bubbles. A soft, elegant, long and consistent wine.

Thanks for notes. I used to buy the (white) Spumante when it was $20ish but it's gotten expensive. Looks like the rose is $40 in US. Might try for curiosity if a local store had it, but not something I'd order. Thanks for heads up on a wine I didn't know existed!
