Anyone know of this petite Bordeaux

by Jim Grow » Thu Jun 21, 2012 2:26 pm

I just bought a bottle of Moulin Saint-Hubert 2007 discounted from $20 to $12 and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this producer from Haut-Benauge. It is probably ready to drink with a little air but I could find very little info other than Bordeaux Central stating that it is 40% Merlot/40% Cab. S and 20% C.F. I have never heard of Haut-Benauge.

Remember, there are between 7,000 and 8,000 producers in Bordeaux. "New" chateaux are the norm. What amazes me is that we can get so many wines from the '09 vintage when we didn't buy hardly any '07's and few '08's. Most of these petite chateaux are in the Entre-de-Mers. And don't forget the co-ops. They play a big part in the overall production, and we are seeing more and more co-op wines, which I consider a good thing. They make marketable quantities of good to very good wine at reasonable prices. If you are ever in France, check out the local co-op. Pretty impressive.

I wouldn't buy a several bottles of a 2007 petit Bordeaux without tasting but one bottle won't break the bank. I would expect it to be fully ready to drink or even OTH. I have tasted some 2007 grands châteaux which were very approachable but also very much over-priced.

at $20 one of us should have heard of it. you can get really decent chateau from the '09 vintage for that price. and there are plenty of unknown chateau showing up from the '09 and '10 vintage at about $10. did you try to google the property?

The following is one of the very best search engines out there, so I just tried.

Zippo!

Not an expect on Bordeaux, but Bordeaux-Haut Benauge is certainly one of the most obscure appellations from that region. Can't recall ever seeing a bottle, or even a tasting note from this AOC.

Bob, there's info out there.

1) a Google of images brings up the label. That has the producers name, J H Laville, on it.

2) That finds http://www.globalwinespirits.com/LAVILLE
and http://www.globalwinespirits.com/cgi/cn ... 2dU5VWTA9!!

Noting that Lavilles speciality is Private Label, Specialty-French Wines for distribution through Duty Free, Hotel - Restaurants, Large Distribution, Speciality Outlets Combine that with wine-searcher and cellartracker, neither of which show the wine and that Global Wines and Spirits in Canada seem to be the only people who have this particular wine and its possible that this is a private label for them.

JH Laville's own blog doesn't mention that label but features Ch des Tuquets (which is the address of J H Laville) so one wonders if Saint-Hubert is a rebadged Tuquets.

However, the blog lasted only 2 posts in 2007 and the JH Laville vignobles-laville.com domain name doesn't have a website.

If it is Tuquets then one reviewer saaid of the 2006 Ruby, clear and very dark. Earthy blackcurrants, a rustic but delicious aroma and flavor that mingles tart fruit with minerality that evokes something like walking down a dusty country road on a summer day.

Ch Tuquets, and 7 other Laville wines are distributed via European Wine Imports in Ohio USA, but not Saint-Hubert which again suggests it could be a private label.

Of course, none of this helps Jim who just wants to know what the wine tastes like :)

Thanks for all the help. I'll post a note soon when I consume it.
