Train trip to San Antonio

by michael dietrich » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:40 am

In mid-July my wife and I are taking Amtrak from Portland to San Antonio. I sell wine here in Oregon and naturally am curious about wine shops to see in San Antonio. We are staying at a hotel in the Riverwalk area. I am looking more for wines from the southern hemisphere but not so much Australia. I figure that San Antonio is a much larger market for this category than Oregon is. Any suggestions ? I did see JS Fine Wines that looks interesting. They just had Jules Taylor from New Zealand in town last week. Thanks.

You might check some of the Texas wines down there. The wineries are not allowed to ship out of state, so that's the only place you can get them. It's been a while since I was down there so can't make specific suggestions, but you should be able to find a tasting room that features them.

Llano Estacado, for one.

It's been over 10 years since we lived in TX and everything has probably changed but for-what-it's-worth I would look for wines from the TX High Plains AVA. Llano was good back then and my favorite was Pheasant Ridge. Bobby Cox was still the owner when I was there and I know he's no longer making wine but still growing and selling to others. I think it was the 1989 vintage of Pheasant Ridge Pinot Noir that was killer.
Another interesting wine (and hard to find back then) is Val Verde Winery Don Luis Tawney Port. They are in Del Rio and the oldest bonded winery in Texas. It should be available in San Antonio.
Enjoy the river walk,
Gary

I remember Pheasant Ridge, too, Gary and saying that causes me to remember that my experience with those wines is older than I thought, and of about your vintage. These two wineries were the only ones that produced wines that tasted like the grapes they were supposedly made from--everything else we tried while there sadly did not. Hope things have changed for the better.
