Wine lunch at Zely and Ritz, Raleigh

by JC (NC) » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:59 pm

I attended this luncheon June 15th--distributor was Sour Grapes featuring sustainable and organic wineries. I didn't record the vintages on the first two wines (they were not listed on the sales order form.)
CHATEAU ROUTAS ROSE' Provence, France. Pale salmon color with transparency. Some strawberry notes. Mild and food friendly but not as appealing to me as a recent Tavel rose' wine.

VILLA FIORE PINOT GRIGIO, Italy. I noted the minerality but didn't find the apricot and mango that the pourer mentioned. PG is not one of my favorite varieties but this was not bad.

2010 CASA DE MOURAZ ENCRUZADO, Portugal. A white wine--Encruzado is the variety. More weight than the Pinot Grigio and more full bodied on the palate. Interesting nose. Long finish and this wine did perhaps exhibit some mango notes. I found it interesting but was not tempted to purchase it.

2011 ZUMM MARTIN SEPP ZWEIGELT, Austria. Dark cherry red with transparency. Nose of red fruits and rose petals. Spiciness on the palate that I didn't note on the nose. I think I prefer Blaufrankisch/Lemberger to Zweigelt. This didn't do much for me.

2009 LUMOS 5 BLOCK PINOT NOIR, Oregon. A dilute, not concentrated, burgundy color. Palate seemed a slight mismatch to the nose but in a pleasurable way. Cherries predominate but with finesse and elegance and a long finish. I really liked this while the lady across from me (who also likes Pinot Noirs) was less enthused. At $25 ($24 at the winery plus I would need to pay shipping) this seemed like a bargain for an Oregon Pinot and I ordered two bottles to be picked up later and learned from the distributor where I could special order more bottles possibly in the fall. Winery only produced 504 cases so it may or may not be available later for re-order. Dai Crisp is the grapegrower and winemaker for Lumos and also manager of Temperance Hill Vineyard.

The lunch was served family-style at each table and included beet risotto, a grain salad with diced radish, daikon, and cucumber, sweet potato gnocchi, and broccoli/Parmesan cheese tart. %15 per person for lunch and wine tasting.

Did you find something else in the ripe end of the fruit spectrum? I never take the specific fruits too seriously. Plus, I'm not sure of the details of your event, but often wines show differently from glass to glass depending on temperature, aeration, etc.

Rahsaan, I would say it tasted a little richer than the usual Pinot Grigio which would maybe indicate some tropical fruit notes--maybe guava.

The chef/part owner is from Israel and does some unusual and inventive salads and risottos. July 18th is the first tomato dinner of several they will have this summer. The tomatoes and much of their produce (including pork) comes from Coon Rock Farm and the owner of CRF is also part owner of Zely and Ritz and Piedmont Restaurant in Durham. Sarig does a tomato panna cotta dessert for the tomato dinner that is delicious and uses a small heirloom gold tomato as the basis.
