News: Canadian wine soon to flow freely between provinces

by Paul B. » Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:43 pm

Looks like Bill C-311 is on track. About time this crazy anachronistic policy was laid to rest... Need to start drinking those Quebec Frontenacs and Marquettes!

Private member's bills rarely sail through Parliament. However, Bill C-311 had all-party support and passed third reading Wednesday night.

"Just passed the wine bill through parliament - wine freedom!" NDP House Leader Nathan Cullen posted on Twitter. "Little hiccup and then we moved it faster than expected through the house."

The bill will now head to the Senate.

It's law!!!

Very happy that progress has been made. It was about time this insane prohibitionist hangover went away.

Glad to hear it. Will I notice it in New Brunswick package stores in August?

Does that mean I will be able to ship Washington to Calgary to Toronto?

Well, if ever there were a "D'OH!" this was the resounding one in Canada. Glad to see progress marching on.

Just seeing the replies now...

While I am glad that there are no more legal restrictions to moving wine between provinces, it's unclear whether general distribution and retail of wines made in various parts of the country will see an appreciable increase in product diversity. I'm not holding my breath that we'll see Quebec Marquette or Nova Scotian Foch on the shelves anytime soon! However, it's great that we can at least bring them back now without any potential issues.

Better for you is that you can order from the winery and they can ship.
