WTN: 2010 Arianna Occhipinti SP 68 Bianco Sicilia IGT -

by James Dietz » Mon Jun 11, 2012 9:35 am

After nearly 3 weeks of eating at restaurants in London and Spain, it was good to be back home and cooking again. I had just received this wine from Envoyer and thought it might be a good match for the food. I must say I originally bought the wine cuz the winemaker is incredibly cute and hot (Greg included pictures of her to entice us, I'm sure), but we really enjoyed the wine.

This is crazy delicious. Think Riesling meets Viognier. Lots of florals and spices and a bit of petrol hit the nose. Acidity is there, but underneath a mix of fruit nuances, none of which is overwhelming or dominant but together provide a complex and interesting palate. I kept thinking young Riesling.

Blend of Albanello and what is locally called Zibibbo (more widely known as Moscato di Alessandria). 11.5% ABV

Served with pan-grilled fish with caramelized onions, pilaf and mushrooms, and sauteed spinach. (92 pts.)

I haven't tasted anything she's made that I didn't like. Try the Frappato.

Lou, I have the 2009 Frappato ready to try later this week. I've heard only good things.

Jim,
While the Frappato's good, the SP 68 red blend is my favorite of her wines. Too bad that Arianna was hung over the day of the Dressner tasting in Chicago last year (the result of the previous night's festivities) as she's otherwise also a lot of fun according to the NYC crowd. :(
