WTN: Drink 'em rieslings

by Rahsaan » Sun Jun 10, 2012 1:38 pm

I have not been drinking much riesling recently, but a dinner the other night in Berlin with white asparagus oozing out of every dish led me straight to the 2007 Nigl Riesling Privat and then the 2010 Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack.

Both were absolutely delicious and absolutely pristine shining examples of what you would expect and hope them to be. I imagine the Nigl has plenty more distance to travel although it was certainly attacking our palates with pleasure.

The Johannisberg was obviously sweeter, but still glistening with plenty of mineral focus and reminded me how much I enjoyed the 2001 version shortly after release, although I don't remember tasting any/many of their wines since then.

I'm actually not a huge fan of the white asparagus. For me, it mainly comes off as a bland mush adorned with various butter sauces that are of course delicious, but which are not actually the asparagus. However, when it's on all the menus and is the most prominently-featured vegetable, I order it and enjoy the festivity.

Hi Rahsaan -

Thank you for the interesting notes. Never had any of the Johannisberg wines. I've heard, though, that they have been improving recently after a long period of underachievement.
