WTN: 1990 Maculan Acininobili

This wine deserves its own post, since it may be the best wine that I've had so far this year.

1990 Azienda Agricola Maculan "Acininobili"
From 375 ml bottle; 85% Vespaiola, 10% Friulano, and 5% Garganega. As with d’Yquem, the grapes are individually picked in several tries, and the wine is aged for two years in new oak.
Medium amber color. Nose of raisins, figs, vanilla, and baking spices. Quite viscous and concentrated, nicely layered, well balanced, moderately sweet, with excellent underlying acidity. Tastes of oranges, apricots, orange peel, baking spices, coffee, walnuts, and honey. Really impressive length on the finish. Outstanding.

I gather that more recent vintages of Acininobili are 100% Vespaiola. Anyway, it's always nice when someone gives a more or less obscure grape a real chance to shine.

I've had this wine from younger vintages and was blown away by it, Andrew. Much better than any of the LateHrvst Picolits from that area I've tried.

Going to have to search this out. We hardly ever see anything but Pinot & Toi.
