WTN: Alamos Torrentes 2011

by Bruce Hayes » Tue May 15, 2012 2:02 pm

Salta (Argentina)
Catena

Bright yellow in the glass.

A very rich nose with lychee, honey, spices and marmalade.

Medium weight, lemon, lime, lychee, very spicy, honeyed, good acidity, floral, bitter citrus rind, viscous and rich.

Mouthwatering, honeyed, spicy on the fairly long finish.

I am usually not a big fan of this grape as I find many examples to be overwhelming, but I enjoyed this version.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

I will look for this. I really like this variety. I've only tried it from Susana Balbo and Zuccardi, but I enjoyed them both.

Hey Bruce,

I love Torrontes - it is so aromatically poignant and full of personality. Personally I find it to work really well with grilled chicken of any sort; even as an apéritif prior to something a bit weightier, or more structured, whatever the case may be.

I had about a 1oz. pour of an Uruguayan Torrontes at a tasting of five wines in Raleigh today. It was nice--aromatic and did have some spice on the finish. I have also enjoyed in the past a late harvest Torrontes from Argentina (I think the producer was Santa Julia.)
