WTN: 2004 Baudry Les Granges

by Jenise » Fri May 11, 2012 9:45 am

Came across this bottle in the cellar and went "oops!" as I've tended to drink these on the youthful side, convinced by someone long ago that the Les Granges are better sooner than later, and of course 04 wasn't a lauded vintage. Too, they're usually so delicious, I've never felt the need to delay consumption--I thought my 04's were long gone. So I opened this last night to accompany a simple beefburger salad and was quite pleasantly surprised--it's drinking very well. Bob, drinking blind as usual, identified the Bordeaux-ish character of the nose but with a slightly different palate, and went straight to the Loire Valley. Too, he easily pegged the vintage as early 2000's, as the wine's color and secondary development suggested it had been around awhile though there was still enough fruit and tannins to expect this wine to hold at this level for some time. What a steal at the $13 I paid--these run $20ish here nowadays.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Les Granges 2000 was drinking really beautifully in 2008 and had, I think, gained something by ageing.
