Turley Zinfandels

I do not drink that much Zin except the odd Gnarly Head or Seven deadly Zins at a summer BBQ, but now I just bought two older (2001 and 2002) Turley Haynes to surprise a friend who really loves the grape. Any idea what I could pair them with? Could I make a cheese course à la Aged Gruyère and Fig Marmalade, perhaps? Or how about a bitter chocolate mousse that I often serve with Amarone? Or do I need something more substantial?

Any ideas appreciated!

I like the idea of the cheese course. Some sort of braised beef or pork dish should work as well.

Dear Fredrik, I recently served a pristine bottle of 2002 Turley Moore Earthquake Vineyard Zinfandel with my family - my father loved it. Not sure if this is representative for Turley Zins in general. However, I was surprised how mature this bottle appeared. I didn't find it particularly powerful or concentrated, rather lacking depth and complexity, hence quite alcoholic and boring. Not sure what food could match well with such a wine. Chocolate, marmalade or cheese could be too powerful, maybe? I'd just pair it with grilled meat.

I'd go with a stew or daube. Older Turleys retain the ripe quality but can become (almost) elegant, and you don't want to overwhelm what is there (or what is left).
