BTN: Craft Brew Festival in the Sault

by Tom N. » Sun May 06, 2012 8:40 pm

I went to Sault Ste. Marie's first craft brew festival a couple of weeks ago. It was a big success with 700 tickets sold.

Broadhead brewery

Long Shot White (wheat beer on tap)

Cloudy sunflower yellow. Fruity nose with hops. Bubblegum and grapefruit on the midpalate. Light bitterness on finish. Showing nicely. Good beer.

Dark Horse Oatmeal Stout
Dark brown. Light nose of caramel and toast. Big time coffee flavours on entry and long coffee finish. Nice stout but a bit too much mocha and coffee for me. Coffee crazy stout - a Cody beer!

Nickel Brook brewery

Maple porter.
Deep brown with yellowish edge. Dark chocolate mocha nose with rich toasted barley. Good chocolaty midpalate with nice finish of mocha notes. Goad acidty but a little too sharp for a porter in my opinion.

Lake of Bays brewery

Rousse Red Ale
Nice amber brown with a hint of red. Cocolaty nose with citrus fruit undertones. Midpalate has some nice light toasty malt notes combined with light fruit - mostly raspberriy. Nice medium long finish with some light bitterness at the end. Very good beer. I would buy it.

Hop City brewery

Lawn Chair Wheat (on tap)

Pale cloudy yellow. Rich nose of bubblegum and ripe melon. Spicy bubblegum with light fruit on the midpalate. Medium length smooth fruit finish. Not very hoppy and very good wheat beer.

Black Oak brewery

Nut Brown Ale

Beautiful dark amber brown. Nose deepens with time and has nice roasted malt, hints of mocha and just a bit of prune athe the back of the nose. God midpalate of mocha and hops. A bit bitter for my taste. Medium length finish of hops and roasted malt. Good beer, just not my style.

Wellington brewery

Russian Imperial Stout

Dark brown. Caramel and roasted nuts on the nose with some dark toast. Smooth entry with nice roast coffee and toast. Good mouth feel and nice smooth mocha dark chocolate finish. Great well-balance stout. Best beer of the tasting for me.

Oh wow, Tom, that sounded like an amazing event. Glad they organized something like that! I am very pleased with the diversity of Ontarian microbrews these days.
