'02 Dom Pérignon & '64 Faustino I Gran Reserva w/ Dinner.

by Noel Ermitano » Sat May 05, 2012 9:57 am

This past Tuesday, the 1st of May 2012, was my 47th birthday; so, after a day of golf (it being Labor Day holiday), I had a quiet dinner at The Goose Station. We were just 5 for dinner, Catha, the children, and I.

Image

To start off, we had some 2002 Champagne Dom Pérignon - it must've been a very ripe vintage for the Champagne region.Toasty, bready aromas mainly with slight white flowers; the ripe fruit is plump, broad, and lush on the palate. Immediately pleasing. I can't guess how long this can age, but it is already more than a little enjoyable now. Notable rounded bottom in this and quite open for barely 10 years from harvest. I should get more of this vintage for early drinking. A cute, precocious champagne.

With the duck and beef courses, 1964 Faustino I Gran Reserva - Superb as usual with a bouquet and flavors of dark red fruit, berries, sous bois, ceps, cedar, violets, underlying leather and sanguine whispers, with only the telltale balsamico telling one that this is an aged Rioja rather than an aged Burgundy. Refined, silken, slightly over medium-bodied. A confident, moderately long finish. Beautiful wine, if I do say so myself.

Due to the wine's age, I removed the cork myself, and there was no problem at all - the cork was in excellent shape, though obviously old.

My birthyear is actually 1965, but that was pretty much a crappy vintage all over the planet. Thus, following the advice of Bodegas Contino Wine-Maker, Jesus De Madrazo Mateo (also a '65er), when it comes to wine, I consider myself 1964 - which happens to be a legendary vintage for Rioja (and, anyway, we were both conceived in 1964).

Double espressos ended yet another deliciously entertaining meal at The Goose Station. The kitchen team does credit to Rob & Sunshine in that, although neither of them were in that evening, all the dishes were very nice, showing the technique, playful and precise use of flavors, and over-all polish their cuisine is known for. Until the next!

Happy birthday!
Nice notes. I've had a couple of decent '65 California wines, though REALLY time to drink up. Have sone cheap Piedmonts, we'll see.

Thanks, Dale. I would certainly more than welcome specific suggestions based on personal experience as to what '65s are still worth buying.

Best,

Noel,
the problems with vintages with poor reps is even if there are scattered good bottles, probably less likely to have been stored 40+ years, so hard to find. But I've had the '65 Inglenook and BV GdL cabs, both were decent but fading. A '65 Louis Martini Mountain Barbera was actually quite good, but that was 10 years ago (I have one bottle I'll try for sister in laws 50th).
I did have quite good 1965 Delaforce Colheita which might be easier to locate.
But if you can drink 64 Rioja, Piedmont, or Bordeaux (esp. Right Bank) as conception wines you certainly won't suffer!

Oh, getting '64s from Rioja and Bdx isn't a problem at all. Actually, I and my partner are the Philippine importers of the '64 Faustino I GR (ex-bodega, so no question as to storage/provenance), and we both have direct access to older Bdx as well. It would be nice to have a good '65 or two though. Thanks for your recommendations.

Happy birthday Noel.

Regarding '65, I had the Lafite not that long ago, and it was very drinkable and enjoyable. Certainly soft and past peak, but nowhere near dead yet.

When did you buy your bottle(s) of it?

I checked just now and I'd not pay US$800-US$1000++/bottle for something acceptable just to get some '65s for my next birthday. I'd probably go US$500-US$600/bottle for a few bottles if the wine is reasonably good, but that's as far as I'd go considering I could get much better vintages. Don't get me wrong, I'm no cheapskate on my wines, but, for a bad vintage, I'll go only so far to buy some birthyear bottles for myself.

The bottle was from a person in my tasting group who bought it in 1968. The price sticker was still on it: $9.99.

Wow!

Oh, well, because of your suggestion, I wound up locating some '65 Latour within the price range I'm willing to buy at. Thanks.

Best,
