TN: 2007 Penfolds Grange

Went along to the early bird tasting at Magill estate this morning. Very pleasantly suprised at the quality of this Grange from such a difficult vintage.

Dark crimson. Nose tight and unyielding but eventually giving up some redcurrent and cherry. On the palate a lovely fruit sweetness, muscular and balanced with good acidity wound around a stiff backbone of gun barrel tannins.

Heard that Grange prices in NZ were going up to over $NZ700 per bottle, and 707 to $NZ250 odd. No more high end Penfolds wines for me!

'Tis a shame, Neil. Meanwhile, I suggest that you console yourself with the marvelous '09 Syrah from Esk Valley which, to my tastes, will give every bit as much pleasure as Grange.

Yes, Esk Valley makes some very good wines.
