WTN: Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

by David M. Bueker » Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:52 am

2006 St. Urbans-Hof Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling Spatlese Erste Lage
Sorry for the jokey reference that will probably stick a song in peoples' heads for the day, but when I poured this wine it smelled and tasted just like a pina colada. It even had a creamy texture that emphasized the pineapple fruitiness. Maybe I was imagining the coconut because of the other elements, but I was pretty sure I got that too. Laura concurred - at least as far as the pineapple and cream. For a spatlese it was a huge wine (no shock given the vintage), though it slimmed down with a bit of air. An hour or so later there was a distinct hoeny note that took a more prominent place (A Taste of Honey...), and changed the overall impression. For that first hour I was questioning whether Rupert Holmes had taken over winemaking duties at St. Urbans-Hof.

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world!

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship
