Made blueberry pancakes from scratch and had some thick-cut bacon on the side. My initial thought was to pair some sickeningly sweet syrah/pinot/cabernet with this...but I opted for a little German v. Austrian showdown. Both wines showed very well and paired surprisingly well with dinner.
- 2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe
This is drinking better than the bottle I had two nights ago. Its crisper, has more energy and the fruit has more finesse. The fresh lemon, white floral, tangerine and pear tones are wonderful...could drink many more bottles of this! (92 pts.) - 2006 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Hohereck - Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
It's incredible how taut, energetic, and focused this is considering the vintage. The nose is soft and feminine with tones of lilly, crushed rock and bosc pears. The palate doesn't have the waxy, juicy fruit that a lot of 2006s have - instead, this is more herbal, more mineral driven, and features floral and pear notes instead of tropical fruits. Alzinger has a unique expression of riesling here. (91 pts.)
