2003 Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese
Spur of the moment opening this, as we went out for some BYO Asian food. Full yellow color, and a blast of ripe mango and pineapple are the calling cards of this wine. It's certainly big, but it's also rather linear in mouth feel, not thick or sticky in any way. There's a bit of a spiced edge, and maybe a touch of flambé that I almost always get from Leitz's Schlossberg. Underneath still copious fruit, extract and richness (not to mention sweetness) is the beginnings of a bright edge, as the acidity starts to peek out from under the covers, asking if winter is over. The finish is long as a Phish jam session, though dramatically better organized, with a gentle trickle of flavor lasting well past the due time for another sip. Excellent showing for this perennially fine wine.
