Fairtrade wine?

by Dave C » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:54 pm

Just did a seach of the forums and the only mention of 'Fairtrade' I could find was in relation to coffee.

Anyone recommend or comment on a Fairtrade wine they have enjoyed recently?

Cheers, Dave C.

It's an interesting and commendable concept, but much of what is in the linked article rings true. Without good quality vineyard land there is not a lot of hope for good quality wine. That would automatically limit the appeal of fairtrade wines in forums such as this one.

It might be interesting to see if there is much in the way of information on top quality wineries and their relationships with vineyard workers.

Thanks!

I've seen that item before and tried one of the Co-Operative Fairtrade wines

The SAf Wild Valley FairTrade Chenin and Cab Sauv in Sainsbury's 'Taste the Difference' range are pretty good. They're from the excellent Bosman winery in Wellington.

They're more expensive than the usual Fairtrade wines, but they've done very well when I've used them in tastings.

The Bosman's made over half the farm land to their workers and MD Petrus Bosman is a very enthusiast proponent of Fairtrade -- so much so I found it difficult to get away from him and his powerpoint printouts at the wine show last year :)

This is Petrus's take on Fairtrade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwoPPFaMZrU
an apprentice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtgMTJs5qbc
and the winemaker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZP3zCEyT3Y

But - with that exception - I've found Fairtrade wines poor and I avoid them.

The bottle in the picture is a Co-op bulk shipped and UK bottled wine, producer not mentioned. Its not the ones to which I was referring, are you sure its made by Bosmans?

Tom, on video he's not an inspiring speaker, and English is his second language but he is quite understandable imo.

Hi Peter,

It is a Co-op linked wine - it says on the back label 'in the shadow of the Limiet Mountains near Wellington, South Africa lies Bosman Family Vineyards.'

Ok, thanks! I didn't realise they supplied the Co-op (and I don't have a nearby branch)

I don't like bulk shipped wines, but that's another story.

I picked it not because I expected a special wine - but I was featuring a 'Fairtrade' wine on my podcast

The Stellar Winery in South Africa turn out a decent shiraz and no added sulphur pinotage and cabernet sauv. Am a bit prejudiced as we do stock them.

Welcome to the Forum, George. Hope you'll be happy here.

What is your customer reaction to 'no added sulphur' wines?

Where in the worlds are you located and when you say you stock them do you run/work in a shop/restaurant ??
