The 9 Most Important Wine Bloggers in the US (?)

by JuliaB » Tue Apr 10, 2012 9:25 pm

Saw this in Vintank. Other than Eric Asimov, I didn't recognize any of them. Guess I'm out of touch. Do you read any of these?

Alder Y/Vinography- I don't read, but am definitely aware of, good rep
NY Cork Report- I've read occasionally , but wouldn't think of as especially important. But give them props as target of John Zucc. outrage, must be good guys.
1WineDude- never read, though he "networks" by commenting on every wine blog
David White - don't know
Jon Bonne - I've read plenty of his stuff in Sac Bee. But "one of the 2 most respected critics in US"?????????
Eric Asimov – always enjoy
Tom Wark - important voice on shipping, but I dont' regularly visit
Steve Heimoff - ego wrapped in delusion
Tyler Coleman - nice guy, I check at least weekly

I receive The New York Cork Report on a regular basis. I enjoy it, though it is limited to NY State wines.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Eric Asimov – Though the Pour is now defunct, Eric’s blog was the the pinnacle of wine blogs. The other greatest wine critic in the US, Eric changed the minds of our industry from the top down. I added him in the hopes that the NYT sees this and brings back the Pour.

When/why did this happen? I found his blog posts an incredibly useful supplement to the more formal panel reports.

WinelibraryTV counted as a blog? While it was often fun, it was really elaborate advertising. Interesting list though. Surprised Wine Doctor and Jamie Goode are not both much higher on the list.

That Top 100 was a weird list indeed. Of the top 5, sure, Alder Y. and Tom W. make sense. Wouldn't have counted Wine Library TV as a blog as David says, but it did get traffic, though it's been defunct for a while. #4 is a blog for a South African wine I've never heard of. And best of all, last posts on #5 (Steve Bachmann of Vinfolio) were from Feb 2010 talking about their bankruptcy plans. I think of Bachmann as obscure, but I guess it's possible there were enough Vinfolio customers worried about their wine that it drove a lot of traffic.
Lenndevours at #16 is what is now NY Cork Report by the way.
Thanks Dave for posting, fun to look at even if I find the metrics puzzling.

1WineDude: Joe is a good guy, highly energetic, hardworking, and smart. He's quick with a quip and good with sound bites, which makes him a good wine blogger/commentator----the "new" wine geek likes sound bites and quick summative estimates and Joe satisfies that, although he's perfectly capable of supplying longer and more complex responses when he decides to do so. He's highly intuitive and explains things well.

I had the opp to spend some time with him on a French trip we were both on, and, as I said, he's a nice guy but very, very serious about what he does. And he has enough courage and dedication to step away from a good position in another business to go out on his own with this wine thing----while at the same time being young, married, and with a new child on the scene.

I tune into him on a regular basis. As I do Alder Yarrow, who has slowly and I imagine much to his surprise over the last few years become somewhat "established" and respectable as a wine critic. :D He's still fun to read, though.

Jon Bonne is great too. Eric Asimov is one of the best.

I doubt if as much as a handful of these are on my radar screen and many important omissions as noted here and by Bob. I'd add Jancis Robinson and Jim Budd and some in French. Does anyone know what criteria are used in arriving at the rating? Is it just US audience or worldwide?

That blog hasn't been updated since 2009.

Stormhoek gained a tremendous amount of publicity and won marketing awards for its use of social media in advertising its wines. It send out boxes of wines to bloggers who requested them etc.

It then crashed in an ugly way. The brand lives on ....

I should be the last one to comment since I'm not a blog follower but isn't a blog something that has a very high % of the content from one person? A forum is something that has content from many people.

To me a forum and board are essentially the same although I tend to think of a forum as having slightly higher quality perhaps because I equate "board" to the old usegroups.

I'm sure this is all wrong.

In my conversation with other folks, I always refer to "the wine forum I am on". Never use the word board.

I draw no distinction between forum and board (though latter does sound more like the oldfashioned usenet bbs).

A blog (web log) of course is quite different. It is typically content from one entity (person originally, though now can be used for a company or club blog) though comments might be allowed. A follower can comment on an entry from blogger, but cannot introduce a new topic. Blog examples for wine would be drvino.com, winediarist.com, or http://jimsloire.blogspot.com. This is a forum.
