Stop Me If You've Heard Of These Grapes Before

by ChaimShraga » Tue Apr 10, 2012 1:52 pm

This is the final piece in the Barkan Assemblage trio that I tasted this month, and potentially the most interesting one due to it's weird varietal blend of grapes grown mostly nowhere else: predominantly Marselan (WTF?) and Caladoc (say what?) with touches of Carignan and Pinotage.

Barkan, Assemblage, Tzafit, 2009

Right of the bat, the sheer idiosyncracy of the blend is patently there on the nose. If someone had told me Tibetian monks made it from grapes from Mars grown on the slopes of the Himalayas, I wouldn't bat an eye. There's a a fairly complex, dusty concoction of spices that reminds me of Barolo, but without the diesel-powered hum of Nebbiolo, plus a few quirks of its own. The palate is not quite as complex as that, nor very intense, but its warmth and friendliness carry a similarly unique stamp of character. Sometimes personality goes a long way and the fact that the fruit is so firmly red toned doesn't hurt. Nor the fact that it the finish displays my numero uno litmus test: s-a-v-o-r-i-n-e-s-s!( Apr. 8, 2012)

About 90 NIS. I can go back to reading the Claremont/Byrne X-Men run now.

Stop!

I used to drink quite a bit of one Marselan. Note and some discussion on the grape here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22703&hilit=marselan
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Hi Chaim -

Thank you for the very interesting note. Actually, I have had some blends containing Marselan. Domaine de la Mordoree has made a Vin de Pays named Re:Naissance that is a 50/50 blend of Marselan and Merlot - there is both a red and a rose version. There was a time when I liked these wines, but Ihave not had either in a few years since my palate has moved away from super-powered Southern Rhones like what Mordoree makes.
Another wine that I have had that contains a smaller amount of Marselan is Montepeloso Eneo from Tuscany. I had the 2008, and remember it being riper than I would have liked. It does get a lot of points from certain people, however. Another Tuscan blend with some Marselan is Ampeleia Kepos; I have not tried this one yet, but it sounds more promising to me given that Elisabetta Foradori is involved with it.

There is a varietal Marselan Vin de Pays d'OC from Domaine Sallies, but I have not tried it yet, either.

As for Caladoc, I have heard the name before, but yours is the first note that I can recall that has mentioned this grape. Like Marselan, it seems to be a relatively recent French crossing.

Hi,

Did a bit of searching:

Caladoc was mentioned in this form before, in a wine from Syria (believe it or not!)
See: http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35448&p=297765&hilit=Caladoc#p297765

Re the wine Chaim listed, the grape was already explained in the Rogov side:

Caladoc (a 1958 French hybrid of Grenach and Malbec)

Caladoc is officially not permitted in any AOC wines in France, and is blended around Languedoc and Provence.

However, DFJ in Portugal do produce a Caladoc wine:

Hi Eli -

Thank you for the info on Caladoc. I see that it is a Grenache x Malbec cross. Jancis Robinson says that it is used to add tannins to some Vins de Pays (which are now known as Indication Géographique Protégée).
