Kracher wines have new American distributor

by Jenise » Sat Apr 07, 2012 11:30 am

Good news, if it means wider distribution and exposure, from the Shanken daily ITB rag:

Terlato Wines International (TWI) has partnered with Austria’s Kracher family to bring their full range of Kracher sweet wines to the U.S., ranging from $24 to $120 a 375-ml. bottle. TWI will import and market the brand’s Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeernauslese non-vintage Cuveé, as well as limited quantities of Kracher’s vintage-dated collector’s series, which will be offered to U.S. sommeliers and fine wine retailers. Additionally, TWI will market two dry wines created in partnership with Aldo Sohm, the wine director for New York restaurant Le Bernardin, and Gerhard Kracher, head of the Kracher estate. Sourced from 40-year-old Grüner vines, the dry wine series includes the Sohm & Kracher Grüner Veltliner and the Sohm & Kracher Grüner Veltliner Single Vineyard.
Kracher is the first Austrian offering for TWI, joining the group’s global portfolio of more than 40 brands. “The addition of Kracher to our portfolio gives us the reference point for Austrian wines, strengthening our leadership position in luxury wines,” says TWI president and CEO Bill Terlato. “Today’s luxury wine consumers are looking to discover new wines, new producers, new regions, new varietals and new styles.”

Gaaah!!! My eyes, my eyes... :P

p.s. Am I alone in reading this thread title and wondering why Bobby Kracher needed better distribution?

Kacher, Mark. :)

There goes our plan for a group bday gift for Oliver, 10,000 business cards for "Oliver McCrum Luxury Wines."

I can't say that I noticed an absence of Kracher in my market, but then again I wouldn't.

There was a brief period of time when the Kracher wines were all the rage. Turns out that one of them tastes pretty much like all the others (across a given part of the range - e.g. the nouvelle vauge), so there's little or no excitement.

I had always enjoyed the Kracher wines, but did not have much basis for comparison to other Austrian stickies. I recently had the chance to taste a Kracher TBA next to a couple of other TBA wines. The Kracher ended up finishing third. The TBA from Tschida was an outstanding wine. Not that I would say no to the Kracher, but I would definitely choose the Tschida TBA if I could find more of it in this country.

Incredibly sweet, high botrytis wines from the same winemaker all tasting similar? I'm shocked and appalled anyone could think that! :P

While I have liked the Kracher wines in the past, they are quite expensive, and I have bought fewer unabashedly sweet wines over the past 2-3 years than I have in the past. To concur with what others have said, my impression has been that these wines are not as popular now as they were several years ago. I would not agree that all of the the Kracher TBAs taste the same, however.

Actually, the 2006 Kracher Illmitz Pinot Gris was a very nice dry wine shortly after release, but I have not tried it since.

Ask Richard Sanford if getting into bed with Terlato was a good idea. The only way that they'll move any wine is with the Free Kracher TBA 3-pack with 20 cases of Santa Margherita.
