WTN: 1999 Leoville Barton

by David M. Bueker » Tue Mar 27, 2012 1:10 pm

Have read some less than flattering things about this wine lately, so I stood one up a couple of weeks ago. Finally got around to it last night. Color was good, and rather more to the ruby end of the spectrum rather than the modern inky purple. Surprisingly there was still some notable oak presence, along with dusty black fruits. On the palate it was mostly intergrated, but in no way resolved. Tannins are still there, and likely to outlive the fruit, but it's not drying now. Overall I think this wine is in a good place, and would happily drink most of my remaining bottles in the near (2 years or so) term. I might leave one or two just to see what happens.

For anyone who might wish to see some of the dissonance, check here http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=43091&p=352463&hilit=+leoville+barton+1999+leoville+barton#p352463

Count me as one who has enjoyed this vintage multiple times since it was released. I think it is one of my wife's epiphany wines.

Glad to see, David, that you had a good experience. I don't think this wine is over yet, but it's not going to hurt to drink them over the next 5 years or so.
Cheers, Jim
