Santa Cruz Recommendations?

by Howie Hart » Sun Mar 25, 2012 10:33 am

I'm leaving for an 11 day trip tomorrow. Most of my time will be in Hawaii, but I will be spending about 3 days in the Santa Cruz, CA area. Does anyone have recommendations for wineries to visit in the area? Or good QPR wines that might not be available back East?
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Ridge is a must stop. The drive up and the view from the top alone is worth it. However believe its only open by apt midweek which is a sit down tasting and walking vineyard tour. Tasting is five wines, cheese and bread. I believe it's $40 per person and last about 90 minutes total.

In Santa Cruz is tasting rooms for Boony Doon and Santa Cruz Mtns among others but I was not impressed.

If you're going to make an appointment at Ridge, might as well see if you can get an appointment at Mt. Eden, which is relatively close by (15-20 mins; nothing is really close together in the Santa Cruz AVA).

$40 for the Ridge tasting does not sound right.. but I could be wrong. I remember $20, but that was some time back, and since I am a member now, I could be wrong.
Cheers, Jim

David Bruce has a nice tasting room that would be on the way to Ridge and Mt. Eden (I believe). Another fun stop is Ahlgren, where you'll taste in a barn and the wine will be poured by Dexter Ahlgren, the owner/winemaker. (I think you'd enjoy talking to him, Howie.) Only problem there is that he's only open on Saturdays.

I just looked it up and it's $30/person.
